About the AMC 8

Tap to read about the format and topics

The AMC 8 is a math competition from the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), and part of its American Mathematics Competitions. It’s a great way for younger students to try problem solving beyond the standard school curriculum, and students who enjoy it may want to continue with the AMC 10 and AMC 12 in later years.

The format

  • Who: students in grade 8 and below
  • Length: 25 questions in 40 minutes
  • When: January 21–27, 2027, held once a year
  • How often: students may take it only once each year
  • Sign-up: through an approved competition site, using its MAA registration form

What it covers

  • Counting and probability
  • Estimation and proportional reasoning
  • Elementary geometry, including the Pythagorean Theorem
  • Spatial visualization
  • Interpreting graphs and tables
  • Some beginning algebra in later questions

About MATHCOUNTS

Tap to read about the levels and rounds

MATHCOUNTS is a national math program for students in grades 6–8. It was founded in 1983 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and CNA Insurance, and its mission is to build students’ confidence and improve their attitudes about math and problem solving.

Our team is preparing for the regional level, which MATHCOUNTS calls the chapter competition. A school can send up to 14 students: 4 who take both the team and individual rounds, and 10 who compete individually.

How students advance

  1. School: used to choose chapter competitors, starting in November
  2. Chapter (regional): February 2027
  3. State: March 2027, for top students from each chapter
  4. National: May 9–10, 2027, an all-expenses-paid trip for the top 4 students from each state

The four rounds

  • Sprint: 30 problems in 40 minutes, no calculator
  • Target: 8 harder problems in 4 pairs, 6 minutes per pair
  • Team: 10 problems solved together
  • Countdown: a fast-paced oral round for top scorers

Together, the rounds are designed to take about 3 hours.
